Mug Life Review of mypressi TWIST

Pick up the December issue of Money for a stack of great gift ideas. For foodies, they’re recommending the TWIST. The guide can also be seen online at: http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2009/moneymag/0911/gallery.gift_guide_foodie.moneymag/6.html

Espresso maker

Named one of the best new products by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, the handheld mypressi TWIST espresso maker uses pneumatic power to create a cup that rivals that of pricier machines ($169, mypressi.com).

We love our espresso, but don’t take it from us – see what a the test driver at Espresso Parts had to say: http://www.expressoparts.com/2009/11/mypressi-i-dont-want-to-like-it.html

Mypressi: I don’t want to like it…
Yes… it is true, I don’t want to like it.

The Mypressi Twist, on the outside is nothing more than a horrible gimmick of a coffee maker that has crappy coffee written all over it.

Shaped like a professional espresso machine porta-filter, complete with a standard double basket. Only taking a turn with the fact that you must pack and tamp the coffee then place the basket in the portable filter handle, lock a sealed chamber of hot water on to it, and pull a gun like trigger to pressurize the water with NO2, to extract the brown liquid.

Sounds great right! Well… it is! It has to be one of the best home espressos I’ve had, and to top it off fully portable, no electricity needed. As long as you have a way to make water hot you’re all set. To boot clean up is a breeze, every thing clicks apart, very much like, I imagine for I have seen many a movie showing such things, a sniper riffle does… click, click, snap… rinse under water and your all done, then snap it all back together.

So… does it taste like espresso? Yes. Is is the same espresso? No. It has all of the flavors of a traditionally pulled espresso, maybe a little softer (to know what I mean you may have to try it yourself). The mouth feel is… well… like a draft Guinness; and why shouldn’t it be, it is pulled with the use of NO2.

The Mypressi Twist comes with a pressurized basket to use if you are using coarse pre-ground coffee (I did not like this option in the cup), as well as a single basket. The overall quality is very high, and for a mere $180-ish it is a steal.

Bottom line, I do like it (did I say that out loud?).

In the November issue of Coffee Talk, the magazine announces this year’s picks for “Best of Show” and “Most Innovative” at Coffee Fest. We’ve included our excerpt from Page 6, but the full article can be found online at http://coffeetalk.com/.

When you think of the people that really set the benchmark for culinary trends, Martha Stewart’s name is always near the top. We couldn’t have been more flattered to be included in “The Briefing” section of the October 2009 issue of Martha Stewart Living - and were simply elated by their description: “The coffee it produces, crema and all, is out of this world.”

wired-oct-09We’re all for a little healthy competition, especially when the competition is stiff and we still come out on top. The mypressi TWIST just received a 9 out of 10 (nearly flawless – buy it now) in the October 2009 issue of WIRED magazine. In their words: “Best yet, the thick, rich brew is just as good as what you’d get from a $2,000 countertop machine.”
